Effects of age of learning on VOT in voiceless stops produced by near-native L2 speakers
نویسنده
چکیده
This study is concerned with effects of age of onset (AO) of acquisition on the production of Voice Onset Time (VOT) among near-native L2 speakers. 41 L1 Spanish early and late learners of L2 Swedish, who had carefully been screened for their “nativelike” L2-proficiency, participated in the study. 8 native speakers of Swedish served as control group. Spectral analyses of VOT were carried out on the subjects’ production of the Swedish voiceless stops /p t k/. The preliminary results show an overall age effect on VOT in the nativelike L2 speakers’ production of all three stops (answer to Research Question 1). Among the late learners only a small minority exhibits actual nativelike L2 behavior (answer to Research Question 2). Finally, far from all early L2 speakers do pass as native speakers of their L2 regarding the production of voiceless stops (answer to Research Question 3).

VOT productions of word-initial stops in Mandarin and English: A cross-language study
Voice Onset Time (VOT) is considered as one of the best methods for examining the timing of voicing in stop consonants and has been applied in the study of many languages. The present study is designed to examine VOT production for phonetically voiceless stops in Mandarin and English by native Chinese speakers. Thirty-six Taiwanese Chinese speakers recruited from National Cheng Kung University ...
متن کاملA Study on VOT of Initial Stops in English Produced by Korean, Thai and Chinese Speakers as L2 Learners
The present paper examines phonetic characteristics of the initial stop consonants of English uttered by ESL learners whose native tongues are Korean, Thai, and Mandarin Chinese. It examines VOT (voice onset time) values of initial stops in the three languages and compares them with those of English stops produced by ESL learners of the three languages. From the acoustic analysis, it can be sai...
متن کاملThe effect of VOT on the intelligibility of English voiceless stops produced by native speakers of Japanese
1 Introduction The phonetic or articulatory difference impedes the perception of certain English sounds produced by native Japanese speakers; English voiceless stops fall under this category of sounds. English voiceless stops are characterized by aspiration in articulation, whereas their Japanese counterparts are known to be unaspirated. As Cruttenden (2001) and Jenkins (2000) point out to lear...
متن کاملImmediate phonetic interference in code-switching and interpreting
VOT of English voiceless stops produced by L1dominant Czech-English bilinguals is examined in light of three hypotheses: (1) switching languages induces an immediate increase in L1 interference, (2) speakers experienced with switching languages show less immediate interference, and (3) interpreting induces greater interference than codeswitching. Eighteen bilinguals, trained vs beginning interp...

This study is concerned with effects of age of onset of L2 acquisition on categorical perception of the voicing contrast in Swedish word initial stops. 41 L1 Spanish early and late learners of L2 Swedish, who had carefully been screened for their ‘nativelike’ L2-proficiency, as well as 15 native speakers of Swedish participated in the study. Three voicing continua were created on the basis of n...
